You can see the dirt on their faces as you walk past their sleeping bodies on the streets of Cairo. Some of them are huddled together, with exhaust from cars blowing over them while people walk by them as if they weren’t even there.

It is impossible to know exactly how many children in Egypt are living and working on the streets, but estimates show around 50,000 children are living on the streets and between 100,000 and one million children are working on the streets to support their family.

These “street” children are extremely vulnerable to trafficking and recruitment into gangs where they are forced into drugs or the weapons trade.

International Needs works hard to show these children that they are seen and that they matter. Part of the street kids ministry includes a back to school event, where each child receives a backpack, school supplies, and a school uniform.

For a child with nothing, not even a place to live, these “tools” for education are an important first step to creating a new life and building a future off the streets.
