This past Saturday, something extraordinary unfolded at The Door Bible Club. As we arrived, two young boys immediately caught our attention, their voices resonating through the room as they sang with such raw emotion. It wasn’t just a song, it was the sound of their hearts, full of longing, yearning for hope in the midst of their painful past.
Teacher Lydia, on duty that day, led the children through a lesson based on our theme, Standing on the Promises of God. At the end of the lesson, the children were invited to write down their prayers—those heartfelt desires of what they longed for God to do in their lives. With hope in their hearts, we all prayed together, standing in faith on God’s promises.
Among the children, two boys, Emmanuel and Benjamin, stood out. These boys, refugees from the war-torn Congo, prayed with such depth of emotion that it moved everyone in the room. Their voices trembled, not just from the weight of their past, but with a fierce hope for a future beyond the horror they had witnessed.
What made this moment unforgettable was the realization that these boys, who have suffered unimaginable trauma, have found a safe space here at one of our Bible clubs—a space filled with love, support, and the opportunity to heal. Emmanuel and Benjamin shared heartbreaking stories of the horrors they’ve faced: the war, the violence, the loss. One of the boys told us how his mother was brutally assaulted during the conflict, almost losing her eyesight.
Despite the deep scars they carry, these boys expressed immense gratitude for the care and love they’ve received in the Bible Club. It has become their sanctuary, a place where they can dream again, where they can feel safe. The boys shared their hope to attend school—something they’ve been denied for so long, and they also requested prayers for their homeland, Congo, a place they’ll always hold dear.
As Homecare staff, witnessing the impact of The Door Bible Club was incredibly moving. It is not just a place of learning; it’s a place of healing, restoration, and hope. In response to their stories, we’ve arranged for trauma therapy sessions to support the boys as they begin to heal from the emotional scars of war.
We are deeply grateful to International Needs and Living Threads for your unwavering partnership with Homecare, helping us reach out to children in Kibera who are living in the darkest of spaces. Your support is making a world of difference in these children’s lives.
Emmanuel and Benjamin’s journey is a testament to the power of love, faith, and safe spaces. Let their story serve as a powerful reminder of the lasting change we can create when we stand together in faith, hope, and action.
Together, we are bringing light to the darkest places.
